A State of Panic
Description
In the 2nd Edition of English in America: A Radical View of the Profession (1996), Richard Ohmann outlines the development of movements in the 70s that reflect the Right’s reaction to the social movements of the sixties, including the beginning of vocational education in Nixon’s administration around 1970. 1975 saw the beginnings of the “Why Johnny Can’t Write” articles in mainstream media which gave the impression of a nationwide literary crisis, of which Ohmann is skeptical.
