Back to Basics
Description
In the 2nd Edition of English in America: A Radical View of the Profession (1996), Richard Ohmann outlines the development of movements in the 80s that reflect the Right’s reaction to the social movements of the sixties, including the Back to Basics movement which led to minimum competency testing as well as a focus on Excellence (1983 reports suggesting boosting education in scientific and technical skills to serve global capitalism). Ohmann also notes a rise in Cultural conservatism: The left is configured as an assault on free-enterprise, family values, Christianity and Western civilization.
