Description
CONTENTS
March 1987: Robertson, Linda R., Sharon Crowley, and Frank Lentricchia. “Opinion: The Wyoming Conference Resolution Opposing Unfair Salaries and Working Conditions for Post-Secondary Teachers of Writing”: Robertson, Crowley, and Lentricchia outline events at the Wyoming Conference on English that shaped the Wyoming Conference Resolution. They ask CE readers to support it that spring at 4C’s; it developed into NCTE’s Guidelines for the Workload of the College English Teacher (published in College English September 1987). The Wyoming Conference’s theme, “Language and the Social Context,” led to discussion, then outrage, then action about writing teachers’ social context and working conditions at all levels. Conversation started within conference sessions but continued outside sessions at the conference where two (unidentified) participants met, circulated a draft resolution among conference participants the next day, collaborated and revised it further with participants in and out of sessions, typed the resolution, and presented it as a petition at the final conference session. Main resolution points were as follows: 1) The compensation and conditions of postsecondary writing faculty’s work are “fundamentally unfair”; 2) These conditions prevent faculty from providing students “the time and attention . . . they both deserve and need” 3) The Executive Committee of CCC is charged with establishing professional working standards and salary expectations, grievance procedures against non-compliant institutions, and officially censuring non-compliant institutions. ADDITIONAL TITLES: “The Purification of Literature and Rhetoric”, “Conflict and Power in the Reader-Response of Adult Basic Writers”, “Problem Definition in Academic Writing”, “The Reasonable Reader: Knowledge and Inquiry in Freshman English”, and columns and recurring sections in every issue: “Poems,” “NCTE to You,” “Comment and Response,” “Review,” “Announcements and CFPs.”
