Robert Connors, in Composition-Rhetoric: Backgrounds, Theory, and Pedagogy (1997), ties women’s public speaking to Quakerism. During the English Reformation, female Quaker preachers spoke in public. American colonies disallowed this; American Quaker women preachers were accused of witchcraft, banished, imprisoned, or executed in the 1600s (39); “full separation of male and female discourse worlds was strongly enforced up through the eighteenth century” (28).
