Description

Composition Studies
Editor: Jennifer Clary-Lemon
Website: http://www.compositionstudies.uwinnipeg.ca/

Composition Studies is the oldest independent journal in the field of rhetoric and composition. It accepts articles on any topics associated with rhetoric and composition, book reviews, and even publishes atypical items like course designs. “We pride ourselves in being a venue of publication for works that don’t fit neatly in other composition journals with more narrowly defined boundaries” (compositionstudies.uwinnipeg.ca/about.html ).

Originally published as Freshman English News, Composition Studies was an alternative to journals affiliated with national organizations like CCC and College English. It’s original focus, as suggested by its first title, was the teaching of freshman composition. While it has expanded to encompass all areas of interest to the field, it does still maintain somewhat of an association with pedagogy.

Composition Studies recently moved from Texas Christian University to the University of Winnipeg’s Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications.

Submission Guidelines
• All appropriate essay submissions will be reviewed by two external readers.
• Manuscripts should be no more than 7,500 words and should conform to current MLA guidelines for format and documentation; they should be free of authors’ names and all other identifying references, including institutional affiliation.
• Submissions should be sent in digital format. Send manuscript as an attachment (.doc, .docx, or .rtf format), with all metadata (i.e., embedded identifying information) removed from the file. Also, be sure to remove all “track changes” features from throughout the manuscript.
• Letters to the editor and responses to articles are strongly encouraged.
Composition Studies will not consider previously published manuscripts. We will not review conference papers that have not been revised and extended for a critical reading audience, nor will we read submissions that exceed the word count.
• Those wishing to submit course designs should first print and study the Course Designs submission instructions.
