Composition Theory
Description
In Rhetoric and Reality: Writing Instruction in American Colleges, 1900-1985 (1987), James Berlin outlines four types of rhetoric that were prevalent during this time period: current-traditional, the rhetoric of liberal culture, rhetoric of a democracy, and the “ideas approach”. While outlining these approaches to composition, Berlin defines and analyzes the epistemologies (or philosophies about the origin, nature, and limits of human knowledge) of each.
