Cultural Empirialism

Description

In The American School From the Puritans to No Child Left Behind (2008), Joel Spring ties cultural imperialism with the educational system. In his treatment of colonial education, Spring notes that American Indians, African-Americans, and Creole slaves faced deculturization during this time period. The colonists saw the American Indians as either pagans or praying Indians. They were confused and/or frightened by American Indian attitudes toward work, the role of women, and sexuality. Dartmouth was founded in 1769 in order to “educate” American Indian men and women.
