Geneva Smitherman, Talkin and Testifyin: The Language of Black America (1977)

Description

Joseph Harris, in A Teaching Subject: Composition Since 1966 (1997), showcases Smitherman’s work which argues that writing teachers spend less time correcting the language of black students and more time responding to what they have to say (this spawned the issue of a student’s right to his or her own language—discussed at 4Cs).
