Description
In The American School From the Puritans to No Child Left Behind (2008), Joel Spring notes that graduate programs in education were established to further research and to train educational leaders in scientific management during this time period (316). Several universities established by wealthy institutions adopted the German model of education as a means to serve industry and government (including: University of Chicago, Cornell, and Carnegie Institute). The Morrill Act in 1862 dealt with educating the industrial classes. The training of teachers was reformed by establishing higher admittance requirements, moving from a two year to a four year degree, and the establishment of Departments of Education.
