James Paul Gee

Description

James Paul Gee was born in San Jose, California and received his B.A. in philosophy from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D in linguistics from Stanford University. He is currently a member of the National Academy of Education. Gee’s earlier work focused on theoretical linguistics, syntactic and semantic theory, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and applications of linguistics to literacy and education. He has taught, researched, and/or headed chairs at Stanford University, Hampshire College, Northeastern University (Boston), the Max Plank Institute for Psycholingustics in Hollard, Boston University, University of Southern California, Clark University, University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Arizona State.  His current research explores the relationship between video games, language, and learning. Gee’s newest book What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy (2003, Second Edition 2007) argues that video games can potentially enhance learning.
