Composition: History & Theory: 1960 - 1969
Journals vs. Textbooks
Description
Robert Connors, in Composition-Rhetoric: Backgrounds, Theory, and Pedagogy (1997), focuses on the clash between journals and textbooks (or theorists and teachers) that began in the 1950s. It is easy to see how the ‘60s process with its focus on prewriting, revision, and purpose clashed with traditionalist approaches during the progressive education movement in the Eisenhower era. According to Connors, the explosion in theoretical work in the ‘60s and ‘70s allowed for growing numbers of composition scholars but also emphasized a divide between those interested in contemporary theory and those married to the traditional textbook.
