Description
Linda Flower is a Professor of Rhetoric at Carnegie Mellon University. She was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1944, and holds a B.A in English and French from Simpson College (Indianola, Iowa) and a PhD in English from Rutgers University (New Jersey). Dr. Flower’s early work focuses primarily on “cognitive processes in writing and bringing a strategic, problem-solving approach to writing instruction.” Her most recent research addresses “how writers construct negotiated meaning in the midst of conflicting internal and social voices.” Dr. Flower is currently conducting research in schools where students are learning new literate practices and “in inner-city community settings” where students of all backgrounds and demographics work together across cultural dividers. She notes that “Out of this has grown a new body of research in intercultural rhetoric and education for community consequences.” She is currently Co-Director of the Center for University Outreach at Carnegie Mellon and is teaching Community Literacy and Intercultural Interpretation.
