Patricia Bizzell
Description
Since 1978, Patricia Bizzell has taught at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she currently serves as Chair of the Department of English. She has also taught at Rutgers University, where she received her PhD in 1975. Bizzell is the author of Academic Discourse and Critical Consciousness (1992). With Bruce Herzberg, she has co-written several books, including: The Rhetorical Tradition: Readings from Classical Times to the Present (1992), and Negotiating Difference: Readings in Multicultural American Rhetoric (1995). With Herzberg and Andrea A. Lunsford, Bizzell co-authored St. Martin’s Handbook (2006, 5th ed). Bizzell’s awards include the Exemplar Award from the Conference on College Composition and Communication (2008), and, with Herzberg, the National Council of Teachers of English Outstanding Book Award for The Rhetorical Tradition (1992). She served as the president of the Rhetoric Society of America from 2004-2006, and is currently on the editorial board of “Voices of Democracy: The U. S. Oratory Project,” a website project devoted to speeches in American History, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (http://www.voicesofdemocracy.com). Her current research interests link rhetoric and religion. Presently, she is pursuing a Masters in Jewish Liberal Studies at Hebrew College.
