The Rise of Single-Mode Textbooks

Description

Robert J. Connors in “The Rise and Fall of the Modes of Discourse” (1981) pinpoints two trends that rose during the 1920s that lead to the demise of using modes in the classroom. The first was the development of single-mode textbooks, which generally dealt with expository writing. The second was the development of thesis texts, which espoused the idea that one controlling idea or theme should dominate student writing, similar to contemporary textbooks.
