The State of National Service
Description
In September, five years after President Clinton signed the National and Community Service Trust Act in 1993, an amendment written to transfer $225,000,000 of AmeriCorps funding to veteran programs was introduced to the Senate. Republicans and democrats vetoed the proposition, causing a rift between volunteer and veteran supporters. Meanwhile, Heifer Project International, which uses donations to provide livestock (including bees, goats, silk worms, and water buffalo) and sustainable training programs to communities in need worldwide, reported raising $19,571,070 in private donations in it’s 1999 annual report. This amount is impressive considering that Feng Shui consultations and Martha Stewart products were selling like hotcakes. When people weren’t paying people to move their couches or learning to make fondant, they could have been reading Happy to be Nappy (Jump at the Sun) by bell hooks and Christopher Raschka to their children—but I kinda doubt it.
