ENG 765: Theory of Literature (Fiction)

Day: W; Time: 6:10pm - 10:00pm; Room: Ellis 203

Instructor: Darrell Spencer

Course Description

Our critical lens will most likely be Gary Saul Morson?s Narrative and Freedom: The Shadows of Time. What we will do is to bring Morson?s theory to bear on four or five?as I see them?significant contemporary novels, not so much as acts of interpretation (Susan Sontag: ?Interpretation is the revenge of the intellect on the world?), but as acts of exploration and discovery that might aid and abet our own writing.

Course Readings

  • Gary Saul Morson?s Narrative and Freedom: The Shadows of Time
  • Four or Five novels yet to be determined

Course Exams and Assignments

  • Lead one class discussion
  • Substantial scholarly paper
  • Perhaps (we?ll decide as a class) write a short novel together
