ENG 765: Theory of Poetry

Day: T/Th; Time: 3:10pm - 5:00pm; Room: Ellis 109

Instructor: Mark Halliday

Course Description

This will be an exploration of Modernism in American poetry focused on FROST, ELIOT, STEVENS. We will discuss as many important poems by these three poets as we can. We will devote probably three weeks to Frost, three to Eliot, and four to Stevens, while always seeking connections and contrasts among them in terms of stylistic choices and world-views. We will work at understanding what Modernism means as reflected in three ways by these three great poets.

Course Exams and Assignments

  • Students will write one short paper (5 pages) and one longer paper (8-10 pages); and also will do one in-class presentation concerning the usefulness of one critic in relation to certain poems. Also, on occasion, students will be asked to bring in selected short bits of useful criticism photocopied for all class members.
