Academic bio:
I came to science writing by a circuitous route. Working on my dissertation ruined my enjoyment of literature for quite a while, so I turned to nonfiction. After about a year of dabbling, I started reading everything I could find about viruses and epidemiology. My eureka moment occurred one night while I was reading a book about Mad Cow disease and realized that I didn’t really know what a protein was. Taking a class seemed to be a good way to find out. I started with biology and then moved to geology; meanwhile, I began to see meaningful ways to connect my passion (science) to my profession (writing) and found science colleagues willing to help experiment with different courses.
